In the heart of Sri Lanka’s vibrant Modara fishing community, a transformative initiative has brought hope and opportunity to families facing the profound challenges of an economic crisis. Renaissance Sri Lanka, in partnership with the United Congress of Fishermen and Fishermen’s Workers, successfully completed a pivotal project aimed at equipping 136 children with essential school supplies. This remarkable endeavor not only addresses immediate educational needs but also lays the foundation for a brighter future for Modara’s younger generation.

A Community in Need 

The Modara fishing community, comprising approximately 200 families, has long relied on traditional fishing as its primary livelihood. However, Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic crisis has significantly disrupted their stability. Rising costs for essentials like fuel and fishing equipment have left families struggling to meet basic needs, let alone education-related expenses. Recognizing this critical issue, the project focused on alleviating the financial strain on families by providing children with the necessary tools to succeed academically.

Tailored Support for Different Age Groups 

On January 3rd, 2025, just a day after the academic year began, the Modara Community Center became a hub of activity and hope. Carefully designed stationery packs were distributed to meet the specific needs of children based on their educational levels: 

  • Primary School Children (Up to 10 Years Old): Packs included CR books, exercise books, pens, pencils, platinum sets, a gum bottle, a ruler, an eraser, a notebook, and a file cover. 
  • Secondary School Children (Up to 16 Years Old): Packs contained CR books, exercise books, pens, pencils, a platinum set, a geometry box, a gum bottle, an eraser, a ruler, a notebook, a black paint book, and a file cover.

Maximizing Impact Through Innovation 

A defining feature of this project was its cost efficiency. By sourcing supplies directly from producers, Renaissance Sri Lanka secured significant discounts, enabling an increase in the number of beneficiaries without exceeding the budget. This strategic approach highlights the organization’s commitment to maximizing impact while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

The heartfelt appreciation expressed by children and their parents underscored the project’s success. Receiving the supplies within their village not only reduced logistical burdens but also strengthened community ties. This year, with the term starting on January 30th, the delayed schedule offered a narrow window of opportunity to provide timely support. Renaissance Sri Lanka’s ability to act swiftly and effectively ensured that children in Modara could begin their school year fully equipped and ready to learn.
